The Creative

Simone Michele (she/they),  is a dancer and choreographer/movement director from South Jersey. She is known to create Afro-Contemporary and Jazz works such as “Mr. Backlash” and “Unapologetic”. She is trained in West African Dance, Contemporary, Modern (Horton), Ballet and Pointe (Vaganova), and Jazz. Simone was selected to participate in Philadanco Dance Company’s Summer Intensive Dance Program and studied under renowned dancers and choreographers. Simone graduated from Howard University where she served as Artistic Director of I. Am. We. Contemporary Dance Company. In her senior year, she directed a Spring Dance Performance with an art exhibit and fundraiser for a girls’ STEM program. Simone was one of the recipients of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society 2017 Laureate Award for the Arts and hopes to continue her work in addressing STEM education and public health innovation through art. Simone has performed at the Ira Aldridge Theater, the Davis Performing Arts Center, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

Simone reached a new peak in her choreographic career while serving as an Artist in Residence at Georgetown University, working with the Black Movement Dance Theater performance group. Simone choreographed many staged pieces before the pandemic in 2020. From there, she was asked to teach virtually and edit videos to hold virtual performances. This was a prime opportunity for her to begin a practice of dance film direction and audio/video editing. Simone hopes to grow in her practice as a movement director on film and to return to dance on stage. Simone hasn’t performed professionally since a panic attack behind a mask, backstage in 2022. She hopes to return with a passion and energy worthy of a first true love like dance.

Simone Michele hopes to not only launch her career as a performer and director but also as a curator of spaces and experiences for artists, scientists, innovators, and the public to gain knowledge in a safe and stimulating way. Art and science need not exist in vacuums. Simone believes that her blessing of both creative thought and scientific aptitude put her in a prime position to move the needle in public health and health literacy. Her newest works on grief and healing will provide a mirror to the viewers and an invitation to explore mental health on a community scale.

Recurrence (2021) BMDT Georgetown

This piece inspired me to continue dance film work. I was challenged to choreograph, teach, and edit this piece virtually.

Balogun (2020) BMDT Georgetown

This piece was inspired by an audio art exhibit at the African Art Museum in Washington, DC. I was inspired to create a piece capturing a day in the life of a woman working as a merchant in an open-air market. This was my last staged performance before the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.
