The Strategic

Simone Stanley, MS graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. While at Howard University, she conducted independent research under Dr. Patrick Ymele-Leki. The purpose of the study was to develop an experiment-based app to introduce fundamental engineering principles. The app, ThermoHUE, helps students learn about chemical kinetics and reactions. This led to a publication in the Chemical Engineering Education Journal and an award from AICHE. Simone was one of the recipients of the TBP 2017 Laureate Award for the Arts and hopes to continue her work in addressing STEM education innovation through art.

At the National Institutes of Health, she worked in the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in the Circuit Dynamics and Connectivity Unit studying the gene expression of cells that undergo neurogenesis. In the Fall of 2018, Simone enrolled in a Master’s in Biotechnology program at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

During her time at Georgetown, Simone studied how to bring life science innovations to market with commercialization tactics and lean start-up strategies. Her team won the Entrepreneurship Excellence Award for their Capstone Project. She was individually awarded the inaugural Jack G. Chirikjian Award for her entrepreneurial spirit, intellectual curiosity, and innovative aptitude.

Since 2018, she has supported start-up companies and small businesses with marketing, business development, outreach, and growth strategies. She is motivated by the challenges associated with communicating science through media and outreach.

In 2022, Simone returned to academia and now serves as an Outreach and Workforce Development Program Manager at Georgetown University Medical Center within the National Institutes of Health’s Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity and Researcher Diversity (AIM-AHEAD) program.

Within AIM-AHEAD, Simone manages the Outreach Mini-grant Program which awarded $250K+ in its first year to Health Equity outreach and AI/ML training efforts. She also founded and curated the Virtual Artist Residency where she connects AI researchers and Film artists in an interdisciplinary learning exercise, incorporating virtual lectures and literature review. She then supports the artists in the creation of short films to prompt discussions of AI and Health Equity. The first short films from the pilot cohort are set to be released on YouTube. She also coordinates several online courses on AIM AHEAD Connect and manages the Health Equity Data Challenge.
